There are many quirky facts about poodles like did you know that they are actually originated from ‘Germany’ and like their fur ‘never’ stops growing.

Also, the poodle was a fairly rare breed in the United States around after World War II.

However, the poodle had become the most popular breed in the country from around the mid-1950s, a position he held for more than 20 years.

Despite its association with the French, poodle origin is a duck hunter in Germany, where the word “pudelin” refers to splashing in the water.

The standard poodle which we see now began its development as a retrieving water dog around more than 400 years ago.

Elegant Poodles of the standard and poodle miniature varieties found favor among the nobles of France and, eventually, all of Europe.

The standard poodle was then bred down to the miniature whereas the toy poodle was first bred in America, in the early 20th century, as a city-dwelling companion dog.

Even when clipped short, a poodle needs to be brushed, bathed, and trimmed every three to six weeks, sometimes more often, to keep the coat well-maintained.

Poodle brushing is necessary because poodles don’t shed like other breeds, loose hair collects in the coats where it will mat very quickly.

Many poodles have weepy eyes that lead to staining of the hair under the eyes.

To cut down on this, wiping around the eyes and face with an alcohol-free pet wipe or washcloth will do the job.

Poodle care also includes checking on ears every week for dirt, redness, or a bad odor that can indicate an infection.

Poodle’s teeth must be brushed at least two or three times a week to remove tartar buildup and the bacteria.

Daily brushing is even better to prevent gum disease and bad breath.

Trimming the nails once or twice a month is a good practice.

If heard clicking on the floor, they’re too long.

Short, neatly trimmed nails keep the feet in good condition and prevent the owner from scratches.

Addison’s Disease:

Addison’s disease is caused by insufficient production of adrenal hormones by the adrenal gland.

Most dogs with Addison’s disease vomit, have a poor appetite, and lethargy.

As the signs of this disease are vague it can be mistaken for other conditions.

Cushing’s Disease:

This condition occurs when the body produces too much cortisol.

It can be due to an imbalance of the pituitary or adrenal gland, or when a dog has too much cortisol resulting from other conditions.

Epilepsy:

Poodle epilepsy is often inherited and can cause mild or severe seizures which may be exhibited by unusual behavior, such as running frantically as if being chased, staggering, or hiding leading to cases such as toy poodle breathing fast.

Hypothyroidism:

Hypothyroidism is thought to be responsible for conditions such as epilepsy, hair loss, obesity, lethargy, hyperpigmentation, pyoderma, and other skin conditions.

Legg-Perthes Disease:

When a Poodle has Legg-Perthes, it leads to the low blood supply to the head of the femur (the large rear leg bone), and the head of the femur that connects to the pelvis begins to disintegrate.

This can lead to dog limping as well in some conditions.

Optic Nerve Hyperplasia:

This condition is a congenital failure if the development of the optic nerve.

It leads to blindness and abnormal pupil response in the eye which is affected.

Don’t confuse this with Dog Eye Discharge which is an entirely different thing of its own.

Von Willebrand’s Disease:

This is an inherited blood disorder that interferes with the blood’s ability to clot.

The main symptom of this disease is excessive bleeding after an injury or surgery.

Other symptoms include nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or bleeding in the stomach or intestines causing health problems in toy poodle and in other types.

Feedin>Feeding

Under 3 months:

While the goal should be to have the mini poodle on a feeding schedule, very young puppies under the age of 3 months are the healthiest when allowed to free feed.

It is important to make sure that the food is fresh.

Puppy:

When the age of the Poodle is at the 3-month mark, Poodles of all varieties should be eating 3 meals per day of standard poodle puppy food, plus snacks.

Adult:

When a pup matures into an adult, this does not necessarily mean that they should suddenly be given only one meal a day.

Standard Poodles have a bit more tolerance to a single dinnertime feeding, however many can also benefit from having a poodle feeding chart.

Several snacks can be given in between meals and this is particularly helpful if the Poodle is a fast eater.

The dog vaccinations are divided into two groups: core and noncore.

These include rabies, parvovirus, distemper and adenovirus 2.

Annual re-vaccination is part of puppy shots schedule.

However, the evidence does exist to show that it is not necessary.

Non-Core Vaccines:

Non-core vaccines are meant to prevent diseases that aren’t that serious if contracted and can be like late puppy vaccination, like bordetella or are not considered completely effective, as the vaccines for leptospirosis and Lyme disease.
